GENERAL INFORMATION |
|
CUERNAVACA Cuernavaca, "The City of Eternal Spring", is the capital of the state of Morelos. It is here where Hernan Cortes chose to build a beautiful castle and many gorgeous haciendas. It is located 50 miles south of Mexico City and is within easy reach of Acapulco, Oaxaca, Puebla and the silver-center, Taxco. The altitude is about 5000 feet.
The average temperature of Cuernavaca is 75°F. Visitors can find a wide range of garden restaurants, nightclubs, many different cultural events and sports activities. The atmosphere of Cuernavaca is more like that of a big town rather than a big city. People are very friendly and life is relaxed and easy-going. There is little crime. Because of its peaceful atmosphere, many Americans have made Cuernavaca their home. At any given time during the year, approximately 2,000 international students can be found living in Cuernavaca (and, of course, this number doubles or triples during the summer). The main square is surrounded by restaurants, sidewalk cafes, bookstores and outdoor markets. Mariachi music is offered at many of the cafes, which serve as informal meeting places for friends, tourists and residents. This is something that everyone must see!!! MAIL AND TELEPHONE Mail can be frustratingly slow, and delivery, either way, may take two weeks or longer. The Mexican post office will not forward international mail, but TLAHUICA will be pleased to forward any letters. Students needing to make collect long distance calls can use the telephones at TLAHUICA. Telephone cards can also be purchased to use public telephones in the city. E-mail is available for students who would like to receive mail electronically. INSURANCE AND MEDICAL SERVICES Students intending to travel to Mexico should check to see what their insurance plan covers if they leave their home country. Excellent medical and dental facilities exist in Cuernavaca. If medical care is needed while in Mexico, it is necessary to pay for these services at the time they are rendered. Therefore, all receipts should be saved for later reimbursement by your insurance company. Should the need arise, TLAHUICA will help you find a doctor or hospital. A doctor is on call at TLAHUICA. MINIMUM AGE OF ENROLLMENT Students must be at least eighteen years old. However, anyone under the age of eighteen is welcome, but must come with a group or with a family and must have a notarized letter, signed by both parents, giving consent to enter Mexico. Students must have a genuine desire to learn Spanish. TLAHUICA maintains a close relationship with several institutions which are always in need of volunteers. It will make the necessary arrangements for students interested in doing part-time social work in orphanages, hospitals or other needy institutions. |
